Relationship Headcanon Generator
How do they act when no one's watching? Enter a ship — romantic (A/B) or platonic (A & B) — and get six headcanons about the two of them, why each fits, and a scene you could open a fic with.
Enter a ship and press the pink button. Use / for romantic and & for platonic — it changes how the headcanons are written.
What makes a ship headcanon land
The best relationship headcanons come from contrast: how each character's canon traits rub against the other's. A stoic and a chatterbox don't just "balance each other out"; one narrates every errand while the other silently hands over the thing they were about to ask for.
- Pick a small, repeatable ritual. Who makes the tea, who steals the blanket, who says goodnight first.
- Show how they fight. Readers believe a relationship more once they've seen it under strain.
- Keep both voices. If one character disappears into "the partner", the headcanon isn't about the ship anymore.
Not sure what dynamic your ship has? Set the dials on the ship dynamics mixer. For solo headcanons, use the character headcanon generator; to put the pair into a situation, try the scenario generator.

Questions writers ask
What is a relationship headcanon?
A relationship headcanon is a fan belief about how two (or more) characters are together that canon never spells out: who wakes up first, how they apologise, what their inside jokes are, how they act when the other is hurt. It can be romantic, platonic or familial.
Does it work for platonic ships?
Yes. Write the pair as "A & B" for platonic (the AO3 convention) and the headcanons stay friendship, family or rivalry. Write "A/B" and they are romantic.
Can I generate headcanons for a poly ship or a group?
Yes — list three or more names. The generator writes about the group dynamic and who plays which role in it.
What does "scene spark" mean?
Every relationship headcanon comes with one concrete moment you could open a fic with, so the idea turns straight into writing instead of sitting in your notes.
How is this different from the character headcanon generator?
The character headcanon generator is about one character on their own. This one is about the space between characters: habits as a couple, how they fight, how they comfort each other.
