What makes angst land
Angst hurts when the pain is a consequence of who the characters are. A goodbye is sad; a goodbye someone chose, for a reason the other will never know, is angst.
Give readers one moment of hope before the turn, and decide early whether you are writing angst with a happy ending (tag it!) or no comfort at all.

Questions writers ask
What is angst in fanfiction?
Angst is the AO3 tag for stories centred on emotional pain: grief, guilt, betrayal, longing. "Angst with a happy ending" means the pain resolves; "no comfort" means it doesn't.
What is the difference between angst and hurt/comfort?
Hurt/comfort is about one character being hurt and another caring for them, so the comfort is the point. Angst is about the pain itself and may never resolve.
Can the AI write angst?
Yes, up to a Teen And Up rating. Press Write on any prompt and choose the Angst tone on the fanfic generator.
